2 Safety Tips For Railroad Crossing

Trains are a necessary way to get people and cargo from point A to point B. Trains can go where other forms of transportation may have a hard time going. They also can cost less to transport cargo than loading the same cargo on a number of trucks to get it to the same place. Since there are so many train tracks around, it is inevitable that trains and roads will cross. In some places, the roads are able to go over the tracks and avoid them altogether, but that's not always a possibility. That means that there have to be railroad crossings. You need to know how to drive safely around the trains and train crossings.

Speed and Stopping

That train going faster than you think that it is. It's hard to judge the speed of an oncoming train, so you can't really tell how much space there is between the train and the crossing, so you can't tell if you have enough space to try to cross before the train gets to where you are. You also need to realize that the train needs a lot of stopping time. It's not like your car that can stop pretty quick. The more weight that a vehicle has, the longer it takes to stop and trains weigh a whole lot. If you are on the track, the train can't just pull up to a stop.

Lightbars

Many railroad crossings have lightbars that come down when a train trips their sensor. The lights flash and the alarms sound. There is also usually a line painted a little way away from the lightbars for you to stop at. You may feel the urge to pull right up to lightbars when they are down and wait for the train to pass that way. However, that's not a good idea, because your car might get hit by debris or other things could happen. You may also feel the urge to go around the lightbars if they are down but you don't see a train. The bars may be malfunctioning, but there could also be a train that is just sitting on the sensor for some reason. It could be waiting for a track to clear or is in a place where it is attaching or detaching cars. You don't know what is going to happen, so don't go around the bars.
